Help In Suffering ( HIS )
Help in Suffering was founded by Englishwoman Crystal Rogers (Mishy to her friends), when, on a stop-over on her way to New Zealand, she saw a lame horse being eaten by crows in the street. She first founded Animal Friend shelter in Delhi and then moved to Jaipur and founded Help in Suffering in l985. Her early helpers were Mr. G.K. Tiwari, still a trustee, Ajay Lobo's family, and Dr. T. Ramchandani. The first shelter was located on land provided by the Rajmata of Jaipur, but after Mrs. Janine Vogler, President of Animaux Secours, France, visited Mishy in l985, Animaux Secours raised the money to enable Mishy to build a new shelter on a piece of abandoned land at Durgapura. At that time the shelter was surrounded by bare fields. Trees were planted and gardens developed.

RESCUE, REHOMING, VETERINARY CLINIC
One of the major roles of Help in Suffering is to rescue abandoned and injured animals from the roads and streets of Jaipur. For this purpose HIS owns a large truck with fold-down ramp which can carry an animal as large as a camel. A specially adapted jeep is used for smaller animal rescues. Every day at least ten to twelve rescues are made, including monkeys (often injured or burnt on power lines), birds such as peacocks, pigeons, and raptors, ponies and donkeys, cattle, dogs, cats and even squirrels, pigs and more rarely, camels. Many of the animals are in a state of extreme suffering due to critical injuries from road accidents. As soon as the animal arrives at the shelter, a vet examines the case. HIS is the only shelter in Jaipur which provides humane mercy killing for animals in extreme pain and distress.
HIS also has a veterinary clinic where every month an average of about 450 cases are treated by the HIS vets. The cases range from a small boy bringing his pet rabbit, to a village woman whose goat has mange, to a family in tears because the street dog living at their gate has been injured on the road. Animals are held for treatment if necessary, and returned to their owners after recovery. HIS also accepts animals for re-homing, but only on condition that the owners have a very good reason for abandoning their animal in a shelter. Attempts are made to re-home as many animals as possible, but as most Indians prefer purebred dogs, it is difficult to find good homes for cross-breeds. About ten animals are adopted per month. HIS also keeps a number of dogs, cats, cattle, birds, equines and camels at the shelter.

HIS is a registered Indian charitable trust working for the benefit of the animals of India. Help in Suffering has three animal shelters, the original shelter, founded in l980, on two acres of land in south Jaipur, a second shelter provided by the Municipality to conduct an ABC program in northern Jaipur, and a shelter in Kalimpong (West Bengal). A specialised Camel Rescue Centre is being built at Bassi, on the Agra Road, the first of its kind in India. Jaipur is the state capital of Rajasthan, and the shelters there employs about thirty-five staff and utilize three rescue vehicles and three mobile clinic vehicles. Six separate projects are conducted, each headed by a vet. The teams leave base to head out into the city and nearby villages each day.
Camel Project
The HIS Camel project is funded by Animaux Secours, the Marchig Trust (Switzerland), and the Carpenter Trust (UK). A new Camel Rescue Centre is being built at Bassi, on the Agra Road, where many camels work, and much help is needed to reduce their suffering. The building of this shelter is being funded by ELSU Foundation (Switzerland). This foundation has also donated a large vehicle with hydraulic hoist to enable HIS to rescue abandonned camels which can no longer stand due to injury or illness. In June 2001, Dr. Devi Shankar Rajoria, working with volunteer vets from the UK, Drs. Richard and Emma Morris, set up the HIS Camel Project as a result of the extreme suffering of working camels seen in the vicinity of Jaipur. Dr Pradeep Singhal now heads the project. Each day a team headed by Dr. Singhal visits different places in Jaipur and in the villages where large numbers of camels are congregated. As much as treating wounds and injuries, the Camel Project team focuses on educating owners so that improved management practices can be introduced. This education is carried out while camels are being treated, by the vet and staff. A leaflet is handed out, written in Rajasthani, and it is explained why the animal is suffering, and how this can be avoided in future.

Education Matters - A Rural Education Volunteering Program
India is a growth economy which very recently entered the 12 economies to have crossed a company sensex mark of 20,000. However, it is still a highly fragmented society with more than 65% of it’s population living in Rural India, which is not showing the spectacular growth as yet. Even the basic services like sanitation, education, health services, issues like women empowerment and livelihood generation can use positive interventions in rural India. In last one decade, a lot of good NGOs / Corporate / Institutions have started working on improving the quality of some of these basic services. However, there is a scope for significant improvement and these institutions are in continuous search for good quality human resources (full time / part time / interns / volunteers) to help them in building a stronger India.
Some of the activities which you could be involved in during the “Rural Education Volunteering” include:
a. Work with one or more rural schools towards achieving the following
b. Conduct Classroom sessions for specific subjects / skills (English, Maths, Music, Arts etc)
c. Make home-trips to the families of children being taught by volunteers to understand their overall situation
d. Design new course material and teaching methods along with teachers
e. Work out new modules to teach the teachers on particular skills (these will depend on the skill level of the Volunteers)
f. Implement Good Practices, learned from your own schooling system in conjunction with local school authorities suiting the local needs
g. Actively but carefully promote concepts like women empowerment in conjunction with the host NGO and community support

Helping Hands - Rural Medical Volunteering Program

There is a popular saying that “In healthy body lives a healthy mind”. Unfortunately health services in the large country like India have not been able to keep pace with the growth in other spheres. Even at house-hold level, the importance attached to good health is relatively low in rural India. The problem is aggravated by the lack of trained medical professionals willing to work in rural India.

Some of the activities which you could be involved in during the “Rural Medical Volunteering” include:
a. Work as a nursing assistant to the village hospital / doctor (will need adequate qualification from your own country)
b. Provide voluntary services in specific wards (children’s ward / Old people ward) for non-medical support services
c. Work on sanitation / health projects at hospital / local surroundings
